Sarah’s Process

Taking inspiration from the capricious weather and ever-changing light on the imposing chalk cliffs, rolling hills, expansive seas and bucolic rivers of the South Downs in East Sussex, Sarah Burges creates striking paintings that capture fleeting moments of the true magnificence of nature.

Resisting traditional more delicate approaches, her large-scale paintings are robust and powerful. Using oil on board and canvas – used liberally to create rich textures - her impressionist style places colour at the core of her work.

The palette for Sarah’s landscapes, seascapes and still-life florals is rich and varied. Combining subtle pastels that evoke the soft air of warm summer evenings or the delicacy of a flower in bloom with blazing oranges, murky greens and bright whites to conjure fierce seas or moonlight reflected on water.
